Overview: Effective communication and self-expression are the focus of this five-week conversational beginner to intermediate level course which is designed to give you further language skills necessary for communicating in Russian, and the confidence to do so.
 
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will have:
• acquired confidence to speak (or speak again)
• learnt relevant vocabulary and the linguistic and cultural competence to handle situations such as:
o talking about themselves and their typical days and hobbies
o visiting restaurants and going shopping
o travelling around and discussing weather and nature
o talking on the phone and about recent technological progress
o discussing favourite books and movies
• gained further understanding of some Russian grammar necessary for conversational Russian
• familiarised with Russian folklore (tongue twisters, riddles, fairy tales, sayings etc)

Course outline:

Week 1: Russian tongue twisters / Why do I study Russian / Let me tell you about myself / Reading parallel texts on the topic (video and discussion)

Week 2: Russian proverbs and sayings / My typical day and my free time / Shopping and restaurants / Reading parallel texts on the topic (video and discussion)

Week 3: Russian folklore (fairy tales) / Weather, Nature and Travelling / Visiting someone / Reading parallel texts on the topic (video and discussion)

Week 4: Russian songs / Talking on the phone in Russian / Means of communication and progress / Reading parallel texts on the topic (video and discussion)

Week 5: Russian quotes / What to read? / Cinema and movies / Reading parallel texts on the topic (video and discussion)

Course format: This series of two-hour classes is held on Thursday evenings over five weeks. Some before-hand vocabulary notes will be offered to the students. There is a short break half-way through each session, and you are welcome to bring refreshments if you wish. Tea and coffee with biscuits will be served.

Teacher: Olga Suvorova has a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and an MA Hons in Linguistics from Lomonosov Moscow State University. She has extensive experience in working with international leaders in both the private and public sectors in New Zealand and Russia. Olga is married to a New Zealander and works in both New Zealand and Moscow.
